Kia Orana and turou greetings from the Cook Islands Nursing Council Team. The Cook Islands Nursing Council is the regulatory authority responsible for the registration of nurses and mandated under the Nurses Act 1986. The Cook Island Nursing council executive team consist of:

  • Secretary of Health
  • Chief Nursing Officer
  • Cook Islands Nursing Association President
  • Nurse Registrar
  • Nurse Practice Representative
  • Cook Islands Education Representative
  • Cook Islands Community Representative

The purpose of the Nursing Council

  • To establish and keep in such manner and in such parts as the Council considers desirable a register of nurses
  • To arrange for and regulate courses of training for nurses and the examination of such persons seeking admission to the register
  • To make such provisions for the issue of certificates to nurses registered under this Act, and wearing of such badges and uniforms by persons as the Council considers expedient
  • To regulate, supervise and restrict within due limits the practices of nurses whether registered or not
  • Generally, within the scope of its authority, to do whatever may in its opinion be necessary for the effective administration of this Act.

The Cook Islands Nursing Council is the regulatory authority responsible for the registration of nurses and mandated under the Nurses Act 1986.

Functions. The Council will undertake the following:

  • Maintain and update Nurses register
  • Maintain and update competencies requirements to registry and annual practicing certificates
  • Maintain and update scopes of practice identified and qualifications required for registration
  • Respond to receiving and acting on complaints received of care and competence concerns
  • Accredit nursing providers to be eligible to practice in the Cook Islands context

Council rules

  • Making such provisions as the Council deems expedient for the purpose of enabling it to carry out the duties imposed upon it by provisions of this Act
  • Prescribing fees for the examination, registration and practicing certificate of nurses
  • Prescribing the conditions under which a person whose name has been struck off the register may be readmitted thereto
  • Prescribing badges and uniforms.
